A Story of Strength and New Direction
When Charlotte* first arrived at Active8, she was 16 years old and carrying far more on her shoulders than most young people should ever have to. Her life before placement had been marked by instability, exploitation, and a lack of routine or structure. Independence had become her armour, a way to protect herself in a world that had not protected her, and because of that, she stepped into Activ8 convinced she didn’t need the 2:1 support offered to her. However, Active8 offered her something she hadn’t experienced in a long time, a place of safety, consistency, and people willing to show up for her every single day.
A New Start Through Patience and Persistence
In those first weeks, Charlotte was resistant, support felt intrusive, structure felt restrictive, and trust was something she couldn’t give lightly. Staff knew that pushing too hard would only reinforce her barriers, so instead they took things slowly, meeting her where she was, not where others expected her to be. The team listened before they led, supported before they challenged and showed her that she didn’t have to navigate everything on her own. Over time, Charlotte’s guard began to lower; she allowed people in, accepted help, and crucially, she began to believe that she deserved it.
Finding Achievement Through Purpose
Once Charlotte began engaging fully with the Active8 team, her progress accelerated quickly. With encouragement, structure, and a reliable routine, she discovered she was capable of far more than she’d realised.
Learning in the Outdoors became a turning point; the practical, experiential nature of the sessions helped her rebuild confidence, teamwork skills and emotional awareness in a safe, supportive environment. These experiences didn’t just give her qualifications; they helped her rediscover her capability and direction.
During her placement, Charlotte completed:
· The King’s Trust Award; Personal Development and Employability – six modules (equivalent to 2 GCSE grades)
· Agored Cymru; Learning in the Outdoors qualification (equivalent to 2 GCSE grades)
· Agored Cymru Level 1 & 3 - Application of Number
· AQA awards x8
For a young person who once doubted the value of education, each qualification represented more than academic success; it was proof of resilience, commitment, and a growing belief in her future.
A Shift in Identity
As Charlotte progressed, she began imagining a future that didn’t revolve around survival, but purpose. Her time with Active8 opened her eyes to social care, a field where empathy, lived experience, and strength are powerful tools. She realised she wanted to use her journey to help others who might feel the way she once did.
Moving Forward With Confidence
By the time Charlotte completed her placement, the young person who had once stood in Active8’s doorway insisting she needed no support had transformed into someone driven, motivated and hopeful. Her achievements, combined with her growing confidence, earned her a place at college to study Social Care, a pathway she chose, pursued, and secured for herself.
Before leaving, Charlotte shared with staff how much the experience had changed her, how routine helped her feel grounded, how the team helped her see her own value, and how the qualifications she achieved became stepping stones toward a future she finally believed she could reach.
Looking Ahead
Today, Charlotte is attending college and working toward a career in social care. She carries not the weight of her past, but the strength she gained from overcoming it. Her journey at Active8 wasn’t just about completing qualifications; it was about reclaiming stability, rebuilding trust, and recognising her own potential.
Charlotte’s journey is a powerful reminder that with the right support, patience, and belief, young people can transform their futures entirely. Charlotte leaves Active8 not limited by her early experiences, but empowered by everything she has achieved and everything she is determined to become.
