Growing Confidence, Building Independence – Nathan’s Journey into Adulthood

Park House provides a structured, person-centred environment where young people can develop essential life skills, build confidence, and prepare for their future adult lives. The focus is on consistent support, meaningful routines, and the creation of opportunities for each young person to progress at their own pace.

Nathan* arrived at Park House in 2023, beginning a journey that would ultimately transform his confidence, communication, and independence. When he first joined us, Nathan had very little functional language and found it difficult to express his needs or preferences. Everyday interactions that many young people take for granted often became sources of frustration for him. However, within Park House’s supportive environment, Nathan began to thrive.

From the outset, adults worked closely with him using a therapeutic approach that prioritised patience, clear communication, and celebrating small steps forward. Staff adapted their methods to suit his learning style, using a variety of tools, including personalised social stories, which Nathan enjoyed keeping with him, to help him understand daily activities and future events. With this consistent support, Nathan slowly began to build his verbal communication skills, learning to request the items he wanted and to express where he wished to go. These achievements, though gradual, represented significant progress.

Nathan’s confidence also grew noticeably. A key milestone was his 18th birthday celebration. Previously, a group event with many people would have been overwhelming for him; however, surrounded by family, peers from other homes, and familiar staff, Nathan enjoyed a brilliant party that reflected how far he had come. He engaged socially, managed the busy environment, and actively participated in the celebration, something that would once have been incredibly challenging. This moment symbolised the positive changes that had taken root during his time at Park House.

Alongside communication, Nathan worked hard to build his independence. He learned new routines, practised daily living skills, and was gently encouraged to take more ownership of his choices. His achievements were the result of both his determination and the consistency of the adults around him. Every member of staff remained focused on supporting Nathan to grow into a confident young adult prepared for the next stage of his life.

Recently, Nathan reached a major milestone, moving into his adult home in supported living. This transition marks the beginning of a new chapter, one while still receiving the support he needs as an adult. For the team, seeing Nathan take this step has been incredibly meaningful. It stands as a testament to his hard work, resilience, and the thoughtful, structured support he has received.

Nathan leaves Park House having made remarkable progress, his journey highlights the power of consistent, compassionate care can have on a young person’s life. The team are immensely proud of him and confident that he will continue to build on his achievements as he begins this exciting new stage of adulthood.
