Alternative Learning

Keys Alternative Learning extends this progression by preparing learners for greater independence, when flexible, curriculum‑led learning becomes clinically and academically appropriate. This programme prepares the young person for the option to transition into Keys Online School or other full-time education or training.

Keys Alternative Learning is a holistic re-engagement and transition programme offering a bespoke combination of online and face-to-face learning alongside vocational and enrichment opportunities.

It is a fixed-term, high-support programme designed to stabilise and re-engage learners, rebuild routines and prepare young people for reintegration. It combines tutor-led sessions, targeted interventions, structured online learning, enrichment and vocational opportunities.

Learners living in residential care, those affected by EBSA or those identified as requiring EOTAS or who have specific SEND needs may all benefit. It is best used when the learner is ready for structured routines and a time-limited pathway toward reintegration into full-time training, education or employment.

Typical delivery is 2–18 hours per week over 12–14 weeks. The curriculum blends academic, vocational and enrichment elements, enabling learners to work toward

multiple qualifications simultaneously. Keys Alternative Learning focuses on readiness to learn, daily routines, executive function and social confidence.

The ultimate goal is to move the young person to their next stage of education, training or employment.
